Cleland, William

Cleland, William (c. 1661–1689)

Scottish soldier and poet. He joined the Covenanters, with whom he fought at Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge in 1679 against Government forces to defend Presbyterianism in Scotland. Later he was an agent for William of Orange, and was made lieutenant colonel of the Cameronian regiment which defended Dunkeld against the Jacobite rebels in 1689; he was killed there.
