Clement XI (1649–1721)

Pope 1700–21. His bull Unigenitus (1713) condemned 101 Jansenistic propositions (see Jansenism). He placed a disastrous ban upon the adaptation of non-Christian rites by missionaries in China.

Thus began the feast of Our Lady of Victory, later changed by Pope Gregory XIII to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and extended to the whole church by Clement XI in 1716.
