Clemente, Roberto Walker (1934-1972)

Puerto Rican-born US baseball player who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates 1955-72. He had a career batting average of .317, was the 11th player in history to reach 3,000 hits, and was an outstanding right fielder.

Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He led the league in hitting four times, hit 240 career home runs, and was the National League's Most Valuable Player 1966. He died in a plane crash while flying to aid Nicaraguan earthquake victims. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame 1973.
