clementine

Small orange, thought to be a hybrid between a tangerine and an orange or a variety of tangerine. It has a flowery taste and scent and is in season in winter. It is commonly grown in North Africa and Spain.

The Moon's south pole. This mosaic is made up from around 1,500 pictures, taken by the US probe Clementine and pieced together to create an orthographic image map. Parts of the south polar Aitken Basin are permanently shadowed by crater walls. It is speculated that ice could persist on the lunar surface here.

US lunar probe launched on 25 January 1994. It spent two months surveying the Moon and discovered an enormous crater on the Moon's far side before being sent on to intercept the asteroid Geographos. The mission was abandoned in June 1994 after a faulty thruster failed to shut off during orbital manoeuvres.
