Clemson

City in Pickens and Anderson Counties, northwestern South Carolina, USA, 45 km/28 mi west-southwest of Greenville, near the Blue Ridge Mountains; population (1990) 11,100. Clemson is primarily an academic city.

It is the home of Clemson University, founded in 1889 and built around Fort Hill, the estate of John C Calhoun (1782–1850). With a 570 ha/1,400 ac campus and a full-time enrollment of some 14,000, the university dominates the community.
