Clifden

Market town and port in County Galway, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,930. It is situated 64 km/40 mi southwest of Westport, near the Twelve Bens mountain range. Clifden is a major tourist centre for Connemara, with fishing, boating, golf, and riding.

Connemara ponies are bred around Clifden and the town hosts an annual pony show. The town was founded by entrepreneur John D'Arcy.

Near Clifden are the remains of the first transatlantic wireless telegraph station in Europe, built for the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. It was destroyed during the Anglo-Irish War of Independence 1919-21. Nearby, a monument marks the spot where John William Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown landed on their first nonstop flight across the Atlantic, from Newfoundland, in 1919. The Connemara marble quarries are also nearby.

Kylemore Castle, now a convent school, is 19 km/12 mi to the north of Clifden.
