Clifton

City in Passaic County, northeastern New Jersey, USA, just to the west and northwest of Passaic; population (1990) 71,800. The city is a manufacturing centre, making steel, chemicals, electronic equipment, machinery, paper, and metal goods, plastics, textiles, and cosmetics. There are numerous office buildings and a large residential component, with many commuters to New York City.

Clifton was a 17th-century fur trade centre. Acquiring territory from Paterson (1831) and Little Falls (1868), it was once part of Passaic, but separated in 1917. Clifton was industrialized in the 1930s.
