Independent city in the Allegheny Mountains, within but administratively separate from Alleghany County, western Virginia, USA, on the Jackson River, 59 km/37 mi north-northeast of Roanoke; population (1990) 4,700. In a coal mining area, with some textile milling and light manufacturing, it is an Amtrak stop.
