Rock climbing at Sennen Cove, near Land's End in Cornwall. There are two main recognized rock-climbing methods. In free climbing, climbers must rely solely on their strength, ingenuity, and skill. Aid climbing is any form of ascent that entails the use of equipment.

Sport originally an integral part of mountaineering. It began as a form of training for Alpine expeditions and is now divided into three categories: the outcrop climb for climbs of up to 30 m/100 ft; the crag climb on cliffs of 30–300 m/100–1,000 ft, and the big wall climb, which is the nearest thing to Alpine climbing, but without the hazards of snow and ice.

One of the most famous rock climbs in Britain is the Old Man of Hoy, off the Orkneys.
