Clinton

Community in the township of Kirkland, in Oneida County, central New York, USA, on Oriskany Creek, 14 km/9 mi southwest of Utica; population (1990 est) 10,200. Clinton is located in an agricultural region with market-garden and dairy farms.

Settled in 1786, it was named after Governor George Clinton. In 1793 Samuel Kirkland founded the Hamilton-Oneida Academy here. Originally an Indian school, the academy was chartered as Hamilton College in 1812, and remains the focus of the town.
