Clonfert

Clonfert

Settlement in the southeast of County Galway, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 430. It is situated near the banks of the River Shannon and the Grand Canal. Clonfert was an early seat of Christian learning, and St Brendan founded a monastery here in 558. The present church is from the 12th century and has a carved Romanesque doorway.
