Clowes, Daniel

    0.02 sec.

Clowes, Daniel (1961– )

US comic-book artist and writer. His graphic novel series Eightball (1989–96) was dark, satirical, and multi-thematic, and included Ghost World, which he adapted into a screenplay for the critically acclaimed film of the same name (2001). He followed with another film adaptation, Art School Confidential, in 2004.

His first comic-book series, Lloyd Llewellyn, was first published in 1985; it drew images from 1950s popular culture and satirized middle-class USA. He published the graphic novel David Boring in 2002. Ghost World features eight interrelated stories about high-school graduates Enid and Rebecca, who face a summer of angst and boredom in suburban USA; the film version starred Scarlett Johansson, Thora Birch, and Steve Buscemi.

Clowes received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 1984. He received several of the comic-book industry Harvey Awards and the 2000 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist.
