Cloyne

Village in County Cork, Republic of Ireland, 24 km/15 mi southeast of Cork city; population (2002) 2,500. Cloyne has a restored 14th-century Protestant cathedral, founded by St Colman in the 7th century, opposite which is a restored and lowered round tower (height 27 m/86 ft).

In the cathedral is a monument to the philosopher George Berkeley, who was bishop of Cloyne 1734-53. There are extensive limestone caves near the village, and a large dolmen.

Cloyne gives its name to a Roman Catholic diocese, the cathedral of which is in Cobh.
