Ciudad Juárez

City on the Rio Grande, in Chihuahua state, northern Mexico, on the US border; population (1995 est) 1,011,800. It lies at an altitude of 1,133 m/3,717 ft opposite to El Paso, which is on the US side of the river in Texas. In 1865 the city was the headquarters of Benito Juárez who founded Mexico as a modern state. It is a market centre for cotton and grain crops.

The city is also the home of the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (1973).
