Cluytens, André

Cluytens, André (1905–1967)

Belgian conductor. He studied piano at Antwerp Conservatory. He first worked for his father as a chorus trainer at the Théâtre Royal in Antwerp, where he later conducted opera. He then held numerous posts in France, including director of the Paris Opéra Comique, 1947–49. In 1955 he conducted Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at Bayreuth. He made his US debut in 1956, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted the Viennese Staatsoper from 1959.
