Coachella

City in Riverside County, southern California, USA, 111 km/69 mi east-southeast of Riverside, and just southeast of Indio, in the Coachella Valley; population (1990) 16,900. It is a trade centre in an arid region irrigated by artesian wells and the Coachella Canal, a branch of the All-American Canal, in which more than 40,500 ha/100,000 ac of land grow market-garden crops, dates (90% of the US total), citrus fruits, and alfalfa.
