Coahuila

State of northeastern Mexico, on the border of Texas, USA; area 151,600 sq km/58,533 sq mi; population (2000 est) 2,295,800. Its capital is Saltillo. Most of the state is an arid plateau, although the Sierra Madre Oriental rises in the east to 3,050 m/10,000 ft. Cattle rearing is a major occupation, and, cotton, wheat, sorghum, maize, walnuts, figs, and grapes are grown with irrigation. There is mining for coal, copper, silver, and lead.
