Coamo

Community in south-central Puerto Rico, on the Coamo River in the southern foothills of the Cordillera Central, 27 km/17 mi eastnortheast of Ponce; population (1990) 13,300. Sited in Coamo Municipio (population (1990) 33,800), it lies in a fertile region that grows sugarcane and tobacco, and processes both. Cattle and horses are also raised in the region. As a resort, Coamo has long been known for its hot springs.

A Spanish colonial town, it was settled in the mid 16th century.

PAS will continue with 355 workers at its processing plant in Salinas and the offices of the Coamo plant, which closed down in January, said Norma Colon Daleccio, VP and general manager of Corporate Relations and Publicity.
