Coamo

Community in south-central Puerto Rico, on the Coamo River in the southern foothills of the Cordillera Central, 27 km/17 mi eastnortheast of Ponce; population (1990) 13,300. Sited in Coamo Municipio (population (1990) 33,800), it lies in a fertile region that grows sugarcane and tobacco, and processes both. Cattle and horses are also raised in the region. As a resort, Coamo has long been known for its hot springs.

A Spanish colonial town, it was settled in the mid 16th century.
