Coats, Michael Lloyd (1946- )

US astronaut. His three space shuttle missions include piloting the first flight of Discovery in August 1984 and commanding the shuttle's March 1989 mission to deploy a Tracking and Data-Relay Satellite. Coats was selected as an astronaut in 1978, and was the acting chief of NASA's Astronaut Office May 1989-March 1990. He left NASA in 1991.
