Cobourg

Town in southeastern Ontario, Canada, on Lake Ontario, 103 km/64 mi east-northeast of Toronto; seat of Northumberland County; population (1991) 15,100. It is a boating and fishing resort with food processing and chemical plants and a rifle factory.

Settled by Loyalists (those who remained loyal to Britain in the American Revolution) in 1798, Cobourg prospered as a harbour, and in the 1850s was the southern terminus of a railway north to Peterborough and iron mines to the northeast, and attracted Pittsburgh industrialists to the area. It continued to flourish as a summer haven for the rich. The town was the seat of Victoria College (1835) before its 1890s relocation to Toronto.
