Coburg

Town in Bavaria, Germany, on the River Itz in the foothills of the Thuringian Forest, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Gotha; population (1995) 43,900. Industries include machinery, toys, porcelain, and tourism. Formerly the capital of the duchy of Coburg, it was part of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha from 1826 to 1918, and a residence of its dukes.

Features

On a hill 160 m/100 ft above the town stands a magnificent old fortress which is now a museum, and includes among its exhibits a collection of 300,000 engravings. The ducal palace of Coburg, Schloss Ehrenburg, was originally a Franciscan friary. There are numerous Renaissance buildings and in the surrounding area there are many fine castles. Albert, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria, was born at Schloss Rosenau, 5 km/3 mi away.
