Coccia, Carlo (1782–1873)

Italian composer, and a pupil of Paisiello. He produced many operas in Italy between 1807 and 1820, then went first to Lisbon and later to London. He became conductor of the London Opera, and also professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and stayed there until 1828, returning in 1833, but in 1840 settled at Novara as maestro di cappella in succession to Mercadante.

Works

c. 40 operas, for example Il matrimonio per cambiale (1807), Donna Caritea, Maria Stuarda (1827), Il lago delle fate, two cantatas.
