cochlear implant

Tiny tube (0.5 mm/0.2 in diameter) inserted into the spiral of the cochlea through a hole in the side of the skull to alleviate deafness. The implant contains 20 electrodes that transmit sound information to the brain. Implants are most successful in very young children.
