cochlear implant

Tiny tube (0.5 mm/0.2 in diameter) inserted into the spiral of the cochlea through a hole in the side of the skull to alleviate deafness. The implant contains 20 electrodes that transmit sound information to the brain. Implants are most successful in very young children.

The Center will focus on two application testbed systems: an rf-powered implantable microsystem (initially a cochlear prosthesis for the profoundly deaf, with subsequent extension to devices for treating epilepsy and Parkinson's disease) and a battery-powered environmental monitoring system capable of measuring atmospheric pollutants and water quality as well as barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, and other variables.
