cockatrice

In ancient and medieval mythology, a monster hatched from a cock's egg by a serpent. Its glance killed all living things except the herb rue and the weasel, but it could be slain by a cock's crow; travellers often carried the bird as protection. It is often identified with the mythological basilisk.

The monster is mentioned by the Roman scientist and historian Pliny the Elder in his Historia Naturalis/Natural History, and by the Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi in the 17th century.

In the Bible, a cockatrice denotes a venomous reptile.
