Cockburn, George

Cockburn, George (1772–1853)

English admiral. In the Revolutionary Wars against France, he served under Nelson with the frigate Minerve 1796–1802. He commanded the Phaeton in the East Indies 1803–05 and took part in the capture of Washington city in 1813.

In 1815 he became commander-in-chief on the island of St Helena, having conveyed Napoleon there from Plymouth.
