Cocker, Edward (1631-1676)

English engraver and teacher. His Cocker's Arithmetic, published posthumously in 1678 (confined to commercial questions only), was popular for nearly a century. ‘According to Cocker’ (meaning, in accordance with strict rule or reckoning) became a proverbial phrase.
