codec

Device or technology that codes and decodes an analogue stream to or from digital data. It is used in applications such as remote broadcast-quality voiceovers recorded in a remote studio and transmitted via codecs and the Internet to a central studio for final mixing. Codecs are also used to compress and decompress digital audio and video for multimedia presentations, especially when delivered over the Internet using streaming technology. Formats such as Real Audio and Video, Windows Media Player, and Apple's Quicktime use codecs to enable the efficient transfer of audio and video information. MPEG is another example of a popular codec.
