Codrington, Christopher (1668-1710)

English soldier and scholar. He served with William III in Flanders in 1694 and was made captain of the 1st regiment of foot guards. In 1697 the king made him captain general and commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands.

He resigned after his failure to capture Guadeloupe from the French in 1703.

In his will he left a large legacy in cash and books to All Souls College, Oxford. He left his Barbadian estates to the Society of Propagation of the Gospel for the foundation of a college in Barbados, now known as Codrington College.
