Coerne, Louis (Adolphe)

Coerne, Louis (Adolphe) (1870-1922)

US conductor and composer. He studied in Europe and at Harvard University. After filling an organist's post at Buffalo and conducting there and at Columbus, he became associate professor at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, and also taught at Harvard. Later he held other distinguished teaching posts and visited Germany, where some of his works were performed.

A Woman of Marblehead, Zenobia (1902; produced Bremen, 1905), Sakuntala (after Kalidasa); incidental music to Euripides' Trojan Women.

Orchestral

symphonic poem Hiawatha (after Longfellow) and other works for orchestra; violin concerto.

Chamber

string quartet in C minor, three piano trios in canon.

Other

six-part Mass; songs.
