Coeur, Jacques (c. 1395-1456)

French merchant and financier. He was the master of the mint under Charles VII, and from 1436 was in charge of the French royal finances. With the fortune that he amassed he founded colleges in Paris, Montpellier, and Bourges, and virtually controlled French trade.

Unfounded allegations of poisoning and fraud led to the confiscation of his fortune in 1451, and Coeur went into exile.
