Coggeshall

Town in Essex, England; population (2001) 5,000. It is situated on the River Blackwater, 10 km/6 mi southeast of Braintree. Coggeshall is an important seed-growing area. Clothing is also manufactured here.

Paycocke's House, built around 1500, is a half-timbered building that now belongs to the National Trust. The Grange Barn at Coggeshall, also owned by the National Trust, is the oldest surviving timber-framed barn in Europe. It dates from the 12th century and was originally part of a Cistercian abbey.
