Coghlan, Éamonn (1952– )

Irish athlete, born in Dublin. Ireland's leading athlete in the 1970s and 1980s, he represented his country in three Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on the medals when finishing fourth in the 1,500-metre final in 1976 and in the 5,000-metre final in 1980. In 1983 he cruised past the Russian Dmitri Dmitriev to take gold in the World Championship 5,000-metre final.

His other greatest successes were for the most part restricted to the indoor athletic circuits, which earned him the nickname ‘the Chairman of the Boards’. He broke the world record for the indoor mile three times 1979–1983. From 1974–1987, he won 52 of his 70 races over 1,500 metres and the mile.
