Cohan, George M(ichael)

    0.01 sec.

Cohan, George M(ichael) (1878-1942)

US composer. His Broadway hit musical Little Johnny Jones (1904) included his classic songs ‘Give My Regards to Broadway’ and ‘Yankee Doodle Boy’. ‘You're a Grand Old Flag’ (1906) further associated him with popular patriotism, as did his World War I song ‘Over There’ (1917).

Born to a theatrical family in Providence, Rhode Island, Cohan spent his youth touring, writing songs, and appearing in musical comedies. A film version of his life, Yankee Doodle Dandy, appeared in 1942, starring James Cagney, who won an Academy Award for his role as Cohan.

Cohan was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 1936.
