Cohan, Robert Paul

    0.01 sec.

Cohan, Robert Paul (1925- )

US choreographer. He was founding artistic director of the London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT) 1969-89 and artistic adviser from 1992. A student of Martha Graham and co-director of her company (1966-69), his choreography is a development of her style. Blending elements of American jazz dance and Graham's modern dance, Cohan's work is marked by a thematic vagueness and a willingness to utilize modern technology as in Video-Life (1987). His works include Cell (1969), a study on the loss of individuality; Waterless Method of Swimming Instruction (1974); the television ballet A Mass for Man (1985); and the Scottish Ballet's productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream (1993) and Aladdin (2000).
