Cohasset

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, USA, on the Atlantic Ocean, 24 km/15 mi southeast of Boston; population (1998 est) 7,100. It is an affluent suburb of Boston and summer resort.

In its early history Cohasset was an important fishing community. Early Europeans came to the area after Captain John Smith landed in 1614. The first land grant was in 1637 and the area was settled by Europeans from the 1670s. There are three museums including the Captain John Wilson House and the Maritime Museum, and two historic districts of the area are included in the national register of historic places. Cohasset is a American Indian name meaning ‘long rocky place’.
