Chur

Capital of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, in the valley of the upper Rhine; population (2000) 33,000. The Roman Catholic cathedral of St Lucius was begun in 1178.

The episcopal court in Chur occupies the site of a Roman castrum (fort) known as Curia Rhaetorum, which commanded the road leading to the Splügen and Bernina passes. The town contains a number of buildings of the 15th–17th centuries. There is also a Protestant cathedral. The painter Angelica Kauffmann was born here.
