Colas Breugnon

Opera by Dmitri Kabalevsky (libretto by V Bragin after R Rolland's novel), first produced in Leningrad (now St Petersburg), Russia, on 22 February 1938; it was revised in 1953 and 1969. In the story the carpenter Colas recalls his colourful life, in which he revenges himself on the Duke who has destroyed his creations.

It sounds good in two-channel stereo, if not quite so good as the higher-priced JVC; it offers three-channel performance for those able to play it back; and it is coupled with the additional goodies that you'll also find on the mid-priced RCA edition: Tchaikovsky's Marche miniature, Borodin's Polovtsian March, Tchaikovsky's March slave, Kabalevsky's Colas Breugnon, and Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla Overture.
