Colby, William Edward (1875-1964)

US lawyer and conservationist. Trained as a lawyer, he specialized in forest and mining law. He campaigned for the expansion of Sequoia National Park and the creation of King's Canyon and Olympic National Parks.

He was born in Benicia, California. His first important conservation battle was an unsuccessful to block the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park. He headed the California State Park Commission from 1927-37. He was a director of the Sierra Club for 49 years.
