Coldwater

City in southern Michigan, USA, on the Sauk River, 45 km/28 mi south-southeast of Battle Creek and 19 km/12 mi north of the Indiana border; seat of Branch County; population (1990) 9,600. A trade centre in a fruit, grain, and dairying region, it mills flour and manufactures marine engines, plastics, cement, furnaces, furniture, and clothing.

This lake resort was founded in 1830 and grew as a Chicago Turnpike village. Its Tibbits Opera House (1882) has long been a major Midwestern entertainment venue. Coldwater Lake, 11 km/7 mi to the south, is the largest of many nearby lakes.
