collective bargaining

Process whereby management, representing an employer, and a trade union, representing employees, agree to negotiate jointly terms and conditions of employment. Agreements can be company-based or industry-wide.

Collective bargaining agreements deal with hours of employment, evaluation of personnel, transfer of employees, leaves of absence and class size.
Essentially, the agreement allows the SEIU to sign up security guards into the union without significant opposition from building owners or contractors; if a majority of security guards working for the five signatory contractors agree, then the union plans to negotiate collective bargaining agreements with the contractors individually but at the same time.
Quite apart from the rights created by the NLRA, union employees have rights created by the collective bargaining agreements to which their unions are signatories.
