Collingwood, Robin George (1889–1943)

English philosopher who believed that any philosophical theory or position could be properly understood only within its own historical context and not from the point of view of the present. His aesthetic theory, outlined in Principles of Art (1938), bases art on expression and imagination.

Collingwood was professor of philosophy at Oxford, and also an authority on the history and archaeology of Roman Britain.
