Collinsville

City in Madison and St Clair Counties, southwestern Illinois, USA, 16 km/10 mi northeast of East St Louis; population (1990) 22,400. Originally a coal mining centre, it now smelts zinc and produces women's clothing and canned foods. There has also been much residential growth in recent decade; Collinsville is now a suburb of East St Louis.

The 891 ha/2,200 ac Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thought to be the remnants of the largest city north of Mexico in the 12th century, is 8 km/5 mi to the southwest. It includes 4 ha/16 ac, 30 m/100 ft–high Monk's Mound, the largest monument of the Temple Mound (Mississippian) culture. Fairmount Race Track is in the southwestern part of Collinsville.
