Coloma

Historic hamlet in El Dorado County, northeastern California, USA, on the South Fork of the American River, 56 km/34 mi east-northeast of Sacramento. It was here on 24 January 24 1848 that James Marshall, employed by Johan Sutter, discovered gold while seeking to establish a sawmill, setting off the California gold rush; by 1849 Coloma had a population of 10,000.

The reconstructed Sutter's Mill is a tourist attraction, now in the 100 ha/240 ac Marshall State Historical Monument.
