By mixing graphite with clay, the French chemist Nicolas Conté (1755–1805) invented the modern pencil of predetermined hardness in 1750 (patented 1795). Capable of a rich range of texture and tone, the graphite (or ‘lead’) pencil replaced the limited metalpoint (see silverpoint) as a drawing instrument. |

| I use a wide variety of mediums to express art, and especially enjoy working with water colors, poster colors, clay, oil pastes, shading pencils, acrylic paints, charcoal, color pencils, puff-on paints, thermocole, origami and different kinds of craft materials. Featured will be works in oil paint, ceramic, plaster, papier-mache, watercolor, computer graphics, photography, acrylic paint, mixed media, fiber, wire, charcoal, pastels, color pencils and even paint cans. At the event, Flannigan will be working with children to create their own works of art with color pencils. |
