Colorado Desert

Low-lying arid region in southern California, extending into the northern part of Baja California, Mexico. Extending for about 320 km/200 mi northwest-southeast, and up to 80 km/50 mi wide, it lies east of the Santa Ana and Laguna Mountains, and west of the San Bernardinoand Chocolate Mountains.

The northern part of the Colorado Desert, the Coachella Valley, is the site of Palm Springs and other resorts. In its centre is the Salton Sea, the lowest part of the former Salton Sink or Trough. In the south is the irrigated Imperial Valley, while the Sand Hills (Algodones Dunes) lie in the southeast. The Colorado (or Low) Desert was formed by the collapse of part of the Coastal Ranges to the west, and is newer and lower than the Mojave Desert (or High Desert), which lies immediately to the northeast.
