History Colorado Springs was founded as a health resort in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer; it was incorporated as a city in 1876. A gold strike at nearby Cripple Creek in 1892 aided its subsequent growth. |
| Colorado Springs is the home of the US Air Force Academy (1954) and the operations centre of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). It is the seat of Colorado College (1874) and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (1965). City Hall is among 54 entries on the national register of historic places. |
