Colorado Springs

City and resort in central Colorado, USA, 120 km/75 mi southeast of Denver, at the foot of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains; seat of El Paso County; population (2000 est) 360,900. The main industries here are defence- and computer-related. It is situated at an altitude of about 1,800 m/6,000 ft and surrounded by magnificent scenery.

History

Colorado Springs was founded as a health resort in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer; it was incorporated as a city in 1876. A gold strike at nearby Cripple Creek in 1892 aided its subsequent growth.

Colorado Springs is the home of the US Air Force Academy (1954) and the operations centre of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). It is the seat of Colorado College (1874) and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (1965). City Hall is among 54 entries on the national register of historic places.
