Columbia County

County in southeastern New York, USA; area 1,652 sq km/638 sq mi; population (1990) 63,000. The county is bounded by the Hudson River (to the west) and Massachusetts (to the east). It is situated mainly in the rolling Taconic Hills, along the Hudson between the Catskill Mountains (to the west) and Berkshire Hills (to the east), and is cut by creeks and dotted with small lakes. Its seat is the city of Hudson, where there is some manufacturing.

The county has traditionally been agricultural, with fruit (chiefly apple) orchards, dairy farming, and horse raising predominating. There is also some suburban development, particularly in the northwest, near Albany. Columbia County has also become a popular exurban retreat for residents of Albany and New York City.
